Musical therapy brings joy for Flora McDonald residents

Residents from our Memory Support Unit at Calvary Flora McDonald, Cowandilla, are enjoying weekly music therapy sessions as part of a 10-week trial program run by a registered music therapist from Creative Therapy Adelaide.

The program and an instrument kit has been part-funded by a generous donation by a current resident’s family and provides the attending residents a chance to maintain motor and communication skills through instrument play and song singing.

Ryan Midgley, Calvary General Manager Retirement Communities South Australia – Aged Care, said the evidence-based music-making activity program had been a welcomed addition to the home.

“Calvary acknowledges the benefits of music therapy for all residents, especially those with dementia, and we are actively pursuing how to continue to embed this into our model of care,” Mr Midgley said.

“While the trial is coming to an end, our lifestyle coordinator at the home has been working with the registered music therapist so they may continue to deliver the program beyond the trial.”

“From my own perspective, it’s a fun way of actively encouraging our residents, their families and staff in meaningful, social engagement,” he added.
