Rehabilitation

The goal of rehabilitation is to improve your physical condition and help you to return to your everyday activities.

Our large rehabilitation service includes an inpatient unit and a day rehabilitation unit. The Inpatient Unit consists of up to 60 beds with the day rehabilitation unit providing tailored exercise programs in a group setting.

Our rehabilitation program combines the expertise of medical specialists, nurses and allied health professionals to provide you with the highest quality of care.

This multi-disciplinary approach helps in achieving successful outcomes, improving your physical condition and helping you to return to your everyday activities.

We offer rehabilitation for the following situations:

  • Orthopaedic conditions, including fractures and joint replacements

  • Post major surgery including spinal surgery

  • Post prolonged hospital stays for major medical evens and conditions

  • Post major medical conditions and prolonged hospital stays

  • General physical deterioration

  • Musculoskeletal conditions

  • Prolonged immobility

  • Parkinson’s disease

  • Neurological and gait disorders

About our services

The rehabilitation team consists of:

  • A rehabilitation and/or aged care medical consultant who can help you manage any issues regarding your recovery in consultation with your referring specialist and general practitioner.

  • Specialist rehabilitation nurses offer care, give advice and information any time of the day or night.

  • Social workers offer counselling, support, information and practical advice on getting help in the community.

  • Pastoral carers offer counselling and support. They can help you on an emotional, personal, practical, and spiritual level.

  • Physiotherapists identify your goals and develop an exercise program to assist with meeting those goals. They offer practical help and advice to promote a strong and steady recovery after your surgery or prolonged illness.

  • Occupational therapists help you manage everyday activities by providing exercises and retraining to assist with your recovery and they will also assist with providing equipment.

  • The dietitian can identify your nutritional needs to promote strength and recovery.

  • The diversional therapist will identify opportunities to keep you involved in your therapy and provide activities to keep you stimulated during your stay.

The inpatient rehabilitation unit at Calvary Health Care Kogarah aims to assist people who have experienced loss of function to gain optimal independence. The inpatient rehabilitation unit specialises in multidisciplinary medical, surgical and aged care rehabilitation.

The inpatient and their family are an integral part of the patient’s care plan and are involved in goal setting and discharge planning to promote and enable a successful transfer to the destination most suitable to each person’s needs.

Our rehabilitation team develop an individualised program for each person and is committed to providing high standards of care in a friendly environment.

Calvary Health Care Kogarah includes two fully equipped gymnasiums and modern hydrotherapy pool. We provide a physiotherapy service from Monday to Saturday.

Patients are encouraged to actively participate in the rehabilitation program.

Calvary Health Care Kogarah’s day rehabilitation unit has a fully equipped gymnasium including resistance machines, exercise bikes, treadmills, arm weights, parallel bars and other equipment appropriate to a specialist program.

Our day rehabilitation unit team develop an individualised program for each person and is committed to providing high standards of care in a friendly environment.

The day rehabilitation unit is designed to cater for reconditioning for:

  • Post major surgery

  • Post major medical conditions

  • Prolonged immobility

  • General physical deterioration

  • Musculoskeletal conditions

  • Gait disorders

  • People with Parkinson’s Disease

Therapy may include:

  • Mobility retraining

  • Balance retraining

  • Stairs retraining

  • Hydrotherapy

  • Joint range of motion exercises

  • Strength exercises

  • Endurance exercises

  • Prescription / progression of individual exercise program

  • Education e.g. falls / injury prevention

People who have been treated in the inpatient rehabilitation unit may be referred to our day rehabilitation unit for ongoing day only programs. Other people are referred by their GP or specialist doctor or by the treating team from another hospital.

Calvary Health Care Kogarah has a 35 square metre hydrotherapy pool situated in the day rehabilitation unit (DRU).

The hydrotherapy pool is for use by inpatient, day rehabilitation and community patients.

This therapy in the pool is supported by a team of dedicated and experienced staff including physiotherapists, allied health assistants and exercise physiologists.
