Calvary St John's Hospital
A place of compassion and comfort
Palliative care
Our commitment to you and your loved one.
At the Gibson Unit, we understand that life’s journey can take unexpected turns. Whether you or a family member are facing a challenging illness or nearing the end of life, our dedicated team is here to provide unwavering support, compassion, and comfort.
Creating a healing environment
A home away from home
When you step into the Gibson Unit at Calvary St. John’s Hospital, you’ll find more than just a medical facility. Our warm and welcoming environment is designed to feel like a home away from home.
Here’s what you can expect:
Private rooms: Most of our rooms are single bedrooms, ensuring privacy and tranquility. Each room features large windows that invite natural light and offer glimpses of our serene garden and courtyard.
Family comfort: We know that family plays a crucial role in healing. That’s why we provide futon couches in the rooms, allowing family members to stay overnight. You can rest assured knowing your loved ones are close by.
The ‘cuddle’ bed: In our dedicated end-of-life room, we have a special feature—the 'cuddle’ bed. This double-sized medical bed allows loved ones to be side by side, sharing moments of comfort and connection during challenging times.
Our gardens. Your sanctuary.
Our beautiful gardens, with their lush greenery, serve as sanctuaries for those navigating the complexities of serious illness or the end of life. Amidst the vibrant petals and rustling leaves, patients find respite from the chaos of medical treatments and emotional strain.
Our gardens offer a gentle escape, allowing individuals to breathe deeply and connect with nature.
In the quietude of a garden, visitors can meditate, reflect, and find solace.
The rustling leaves and gentle sway of blossoms become a backdrop for self-discovery, reflection and acceptance.
Comforts that matter
There are little touches of kindness and support to make your stay with us as comfortable as possible:
Oncology massage: Enjoy complimentary oncology massages to soothe your body.
Handmade quilts and gowns: Our community partners and the Bruny Island Sew and Sews donate quality handmade quilts and gowns for your comfort.
Entertainment: Use our iPads and Bluetooth headsets to connect to your Netflix, music, podcasts, and video calls.
Furry friends: Pet dogs can visit upon request, bringing warmth and companionship.
Quiet spaces: Explore the Webber lounge or Mary Potter room for peaceful moments.
