At Calvary Central Districts Hospital we provide a comprehensive range of cancer services, diagnosis and treatment including chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. Our focus is on patient care and helping you through your entire journey to wellness.
Our expert team of doctors and nurses work with you to decide the best course of treatment and care. Our staff will guide you through every step of your treatment journey with educational and emotional support.
The Mary Potter Northern Supportive Care Unit (Grote Ward) was established in 2012 through the generosity of a bequest from the Mary Potter Foundation.
The unit provides care for patients with progressive, life-limiting disease. Supportive care encompasses physical, social, psychological and spiritual care for patients and their family. It aims at minimising the impact of the progressive illness so that patients may have the maximum function and comfort possible, within the limits of their illness.
The unit supports patients with:
the control of symptoms
respite
terminal care
To ensure a seamless transfer between home or hospital, our dedicated staff work closely with the Northern Palliative Care Service, and provide referral to a specialist unit if required.
The unit provides comfortable facilities for both patients and family members. Family members may stay overnight and also utilise the family room, which caters for younger children. Meals are available from Cee Dee’s Cafe. All rooms are equipped with ensuites and a private courtyard to encourage independence and wellbeing during a challenging time.
Our chapel is open 24 hours a day for prayer or quiet contemplation.

We provide services for patients that present with acute or chronic medical conditions. We can arrange transfer from other public or private hospitals to our care if your doctor is permitting.
Our nurses are dedicated, caring and focused on delivering excellent nursing care to our patients. We endeavor and strive to identify patients individual health care needs and discharge goals and together with physicians and the allied health care team, work in reaching these goals.
Specialty areas include but are not limited to:
Pneumonia and other lung conditions
Cellulitis
Vertigo
Congestive Cardiac Failure
Febrile illnesses
Diabetic patients
Urinary Tract infections
Patients after mechanical fall.
For patients requiring hospitalisation for elective/chronic medical conditions you can speak to the Director of Clinical Services at the hospital who can refer your GP to the on call Physician. To arrange an admission please call the hospital direct on 1300 997 292.
All patients are required to have private health insurance if they require hospitalisation under the care of the participating Physicians.

One of our registered nurses may contact you prior to your admission to hospital to:
Discuss your care before and after surgery
Check your health history and complete other admission paperwork
Provide you with any necessary pre-operative instructions
Check you have had any tests ordered by your doctor
Commence discharge planning to help plan for your return home

At Calvary Central Districts Hospital we have a number of orthopaedic surgeons across many specialties both consulting and operating on site. Patients are referred from their GP or physician and a consultation will then be booked. Specialist skills In orthopaedic nursing and allied health ensure the best possible care for your stay in hospital.
In-house physiotherapy is provided post operatively to ensure that your recovery is optimum. Calvary Central Districts Hospital can also arrange rehabilitation should this be clinically indicated via Calvary Rehabilitation Hospital.

Care and support services
At Calvary, we care about your physical, spiritual and emotional needs.
These support services are available to our patients as part of our holistic care.
The biography services gives palliative care patients an opportunity to reflect on their lives. Biographies are created in the form of life stories, reflections, reviews of specific times or events, family stories or tributes to loved ones.
Every biography is confidential and recordings take place in hospital or at home. The biography recordings are transcribed respecting the integrity of your own words. Six one hour recording sessions with a trained biographer are offered and up to ten photos may be included to enhance your story.
This service is provided by trained volunteers free of charge.
You’ll receive two copies of your biography, printed and bound as well as a CD.

Dietician services helps with areas such as weight management, education, checking nutritional levels, meal planning, promoting healthy eating and supporting people having bariatric surgery.
At Calvary Central Districts Hospital our specialist dietician will work with you to create an individual treatment plan. If you’re a patient at Calvary Central Districts Hospital, our dietician will collaborate with our in-house chefs to ensure your meals are appetising, delicious, and meet your specific dietary needs.
We also provide educational resources to help you maintain your nutritional status both during your admission and after you leave.

When visiting the hospital
If you have a planned admission to Calvary Central Districts Hospital you will have the opportunity to describe your disability and appropriate arrangements can be included in your admission process.
Referrals will be provided to agencies that can assist with disability support services.
Disability support at home
Calvary Home Care provides a range of disability services in the home. We support disabled children, adults and older people to be as independent as possible and become actively involved in their local community.
Calvary Home Care can also help with managing Individual Support Package (ISP) and funding allocations.
Hospital to Home
At Calvary, we can help with the practical arrangements involved in returning home from hospital. We can also support you during your recovery.
Calvary Home Care’s Hospital to Home Service can be provided under a government subsidised support package (if you’re eligible), delivered on a private basis, or as a combination of the two.
Calvary Home Care
Calvary Home Care can help with everyday tasks to help you recover safely and quickly. It is also useful to consider Home Care services if you have carer who may not be able to safely move or bathe you; may need a break; or may need time away from home to do other things. Calvary Community Care Services include:
Transport to and from hospital appointments and for everyday tasks
Cooking and grocery shopping
Dressing and showering
Cleaning and household maintenance
Respite care
Occupational therapy helps people take part in everyday activities. Occupational therapists help to modify your environment, provide adaptive equipment and explore different ways to complete activities.
Our Occupational therapists are focussed on helping you maintain your independence, mobility and safety. We’ll look at your home and work with you and your family to find the right equipment and suggest minor modifications to make life easier.
Occupational Therapists can also organise for minor work to be completed and can give you access to any necessary equipment. All equipment can be trialled, borrowed and purchased.

At Calvary Central Districts Hospital we have an in-hospital pharmacy, managed by HPS Pharmacy.
HPS Pharmacy stocks a large range of medications. In some cases they also provide more specialised and investigational medications.
The Pharmacy at Calvary Central Districts Hospital provides medications for hospital patients, and offers a prescription service to the public.
Please note: It’s important that patients bring their current medications and prescriptions when they are admitted to hospital.

Physiotherapists assess and develop programs to improve a patient’s strength, mobility, movement and function. Our team offer advice on personal mobility and safety in both individual and group sessions.
Our physiotherapist can help with:
Managing lung conditions
Managing lymphoedema
Mobility
Using equipment such as walking aids, splints and collars
Prescribing exercises to help build strength and endurance

Speech pathology, also known as speech therapy, is the diagnosis, management and treatment of people who are unable to communicate effectively or suffer from the following issues:

Recent problems with reading and writing
Swallowing difficulties
Slurred speech
At Calvary Central Districts Hospital our speech pathologist help a variety of people who fail to develop normal communication or people who acquire communication issues as a result of disease, injury or stroke.

An individual treatment plan will be created, and your sessions take place in your hospital room.

Tests and diagnostic services
Diagnostic services cover a range of scans, x-rays and laboratory tests used by specialists to determine the cause of an illness.
At Calvary Central Districts Hospital we offer the following range of diagnostic services.
Endoscopy is a general term covering any procedure that involves examining the interior of the body with an endoscope.
Endoscopy can be used in the following procedures:
Bronchoscopy (examination of the lungs)
Colonoscopy (examination of the large bowel)
Cystoscopy (examination of the bladder)
Gastroscopy (examination of the stomach)
Please note:
Endoscopy is carried out under anaesthesia, which means you won’t be able to drive home after your procedure.
You’ll receive instruction from your GP f treating specialist about preparing for your endoscopy. Please follow them carefully.

Clinpath offers a laboratory service that delivers expert analysis, testing and advice to our team of Health Care Professionals. We offer a comprehensive range of routine, specialty and emergency pathology testing, with a fast turnaround for results.
Results can be downloaded electronically or delivered by courier to your Medical Specialist.
