After working in a hospital for more than 15 years, including several years on a COVID-19 ward, Rebecca Deveraux needed a change.

The Registered Nurse made the decision to switch to community nursing to spend more time with her three children.

“I joined the Calvary Home Care Riverina team because it allowed me to help my community and gave me the flexibility I needed. The team have been so incredibly supportive and having that work-life balance is such an attractive option,” Ms Deveraux said.

As a Registered Nurse for Calvary Riverina Home Care, Ms Deveraux has a range of responsibilities. Depending on the client’s needs her day involves everything from undertaking clinical assessments, to wound care, falls assessments and medication management.

“Each day is different because we have clients with a variety of needs. There are clients who require daily support, and we also have people who are quite independent and we focus on future planning with them. It is not necessarily about providing that day-to-day support now but looking at what we can put into place so there isn’t a rapid decline,” Ms Deveraux said.

Calvary Home Care General Manager, NSW and ACT, Jessica Scaife, said the team visited clients across the Riverina, from Wagga Wagga to Albury, the Snowy Valleys, Temora, Junee, Cootamundra and Gundagai.

“Our team is incredibly passionate about being able to provide the support our clients need to stay in their home for longer. We provide domestic assistance, personal care, respite care, social support and allied health depending on the clients’ needs,” Ms Scaife said.

The Calvary Riverina Home Care team is expanding its existing services, with a range of employment opportunities available. Ms Deveraux encourages anyone looking for a career change to consider home care.

“When I was training to become a nurse, I thought I’d be in the operating theatre or emergency. I know now that working in home care is where I’m meant to be. It is such an interesting career path,” Ms Deveraux said.

“Helping people to stay in their homes for longer is incredibly rewarding. You build relationships with your clients and together you reach health and social goals. Each day I go to work I know I’m doing a good thing and I feel really positive about what I do.”

The Calvary Riverina Home Care Service Centre recently relocated to 149 Baylis Street, Wagga Wagga.
