Facilities
Our hospital offers a range of amenities to ensure comfort and convenience for both patients and visitors.
Calvary Mater Newcastle has been designed so that everyone can easily access our facilities, using inclined walkways and ramps throughout. All levels of our hospital are accessible by lifts.
We have clear, straightforward signage throughout the hospital to make it easier to find your way around. The signage uses contrasting colours to help people with impaired vision.
Wheelchairs are available for use while at the hospital. If you need a wheelchair, we’ll provide you with one at admission or you can get help at the Information Desk located in main reception area, level 3.
If you’re in the car park and need a wheelchair, or assistance getting to or from your appointment, please dial 02 4921 1211 for help.

We provide all patients with free-to-air television at their bedside and there’s no charge for this service.
Bedside telephones are available in some wards.
Located on level 3, close to the chapel, Amigo Shop To Go, sells a range of newspapers, meals, confectionery, hot and cold drinks, gifts, books, cards, and toiletries.
It also offers mobile phone/data recharges.
Amigo Shop To Go: Monday to Friday, 7:00am – 7:45pm. Weekends and public holidays, 8:00 – 7:00pm
DeliMarche: Monday to Friday, 8:00am – 4pm
Coffee cart: located on level 2, Monday to Friday, 7am – 2pm
Vending machines
Snack and drink vending machines are located in the Emergency Department Waiting Room; these operate 24 hours a day.
Calvary Mater Newcastle values the religious and cultural needs of those for whom we care. Religious representatives of all faiths are welcome to visit patients from their community of faith. Most Christian denominations and other faiths have an appointed Chaplain/representative to the hospital who is available to visit as requested.
Chapels for quiet reflection and prayer are located in:
the main hospital corridor, level 3, next to the café
the hospice, adjacent to the entrance
A meditation room is also available on level 3, staff at the information desk will provide directions.
Both chapels and the meditation room are available for use by patients, families, visitors and staff.
For those patients whose religious tradition values Sacramental Care, Holy Communion, Anointing of the Sick, and Reconciliation are available. Arrangements can be made through the Pastoral Care staff or a message can be left on 02 4014 4687.
Group therapy exercise classes are available to patients before, during and after their episode of care at Calvary Mater Newcastle.
These therapy sessions will be discussed with you by a member of your care team.
We offer compassionate emotional support and spiritual care for you, your family and friends. Our pastoral care service acknowledges your beliefs, important relationships and all that is meaningful for you. It affirms your intrinsic value as a person.
Pastoral care can help if you are:
Emotionally distressed
Struggling with a sense of purpose or meaning
Experiencing a time of crisis
Feeling lonely or isolated
Grieving a loss
Making important decisions
Needing support with your religious/spiritual practice
Wishing to contact a priest or minister of religion
Preparing for death

If you would like a visit from pastoral care during your stay, please ask a staff member.
Patient rooms
If you’re coming in for an overnight (or longer) stay, we have shared and single rooms available.
Each bed has a small set of drawers next to it for your personal belongings. There is not much room though, so please don’t bring too many things with you.
All our rooms have the following features and facilities:

Bathroom and Toilet
Small set of drawers for personal belongings
Television and radio
At times patients may be relocated within their ward or transferred to another ward to continue their care.
Single rooms are assigned based on clinical priority determined by the individual patient’s medical needs.
Accommodation service - rural patients
Calvary Mater Newcastle has accommodation available for rural and remote patients receiving treatment as an outpatient at the hospital. A support person, relative or friend is also welcome to stay with you.
Patients wishing to utilise the accommodation will be assessed by nursing staff and allocated a room based on a patient’s clinical need. Priority is given to patients who are receiving active daily outpatient treatment.
All residents must be totally self-caring or independent with the assistance of a carer.
There are no staff in attendance at the accommodation overnight or on weekends. You must supply and prepare your own food. Rooms are cleaned and fresh linen provided weekly. All accommodation is strictly non-smoking.
The Villas
There are 16 twin rooms available in the Villa Units with a maximum of two adults allowed in each room. Each room has its own ensuite, air conditioner, telephone, television and bar fridge. There is a communal fully equipped kitchen, laundry and lounge room.
The Villas are reserved strictly for rural/remote outpatients receiving active treatment and their carers.
Fees for the Villas will be discussed with the accommodation nurse or the social worker.
Unfortunately the Villas Units do not accommodate children.

The onsite dispensing pharmacy at Calvary Mater Newcastle will provide discharged patients with a short supply of their prescribed medications. The pharmacy is not open to the general public.
Patients may use their mobile phone while at Calvary Mater Newcastle. Please be considerate of other patients, and keep call volume, duration and frequency to a minimum.

Bedside telephones are available in some wards.
A post box is located outside the hospital’s main entrance and the post box is cleared daily. Our cashier sells postage stamps.
Our patients enjoy a redeveloped modern, light and airy environment, surrounded by well-maintained gardens.
Visitor lounge
Seating for visitors is available in the main entrance foyer and corridor. A number of wards also have separate patient and visitor lounges.
